EUSC Beer Festival

After work I popped in to Egham United Services Club for a sneak preview of their latest beer festival. The club has won a number of CAMRA awards including 2 regional Club of the Year awards. It is one of the finalists in the 2010 CAMRA National Club of the Year. They have been holding beer festivals since December 2008 and in the short period since that first one have rapidly become one of the “must do” pub festivals for beer scoopers from all over the country.

Unfortunately, due to prior commitments (my Mum was staying with us), I was unable to make any of the main festival sessions. My main reason for popping along was to try and sample one of the festival special beers that had been brewed by the Pitstop brewery. Celebration, 6.0%, a Belgian Chocolate Truffle Stout, brewed to celebrate the festival organisers 10th wedding anniversary. Regular readers will recall that Claire and I have also just passed the 10 year milestone and we both love stout (and chocolate), so it seemed rude not to try this beer.

In my short visit to the club I finally sampled a beer from the recently started Windsor & Eton brewery, Knight Of The Garter, 3.8%, which lived up to all of the acclaim it has been receiving. Next up was the Celebration which was absolutely superb, and I also managed to secure a takeaway for Claire to sample, even though the hand pump died while I was there. Finally I had Dark Star Tripel, 8.5%, which was another excellent beer from this Sussex brewery. I can’t recall ever having had a bad Dark Star beer and this was no exception, being a superb take on a Belgian Triple Ale.

So just the three beers which had well and truly whetted my appetite for a festival I wasn’t going to be able to attend. I’ll be there next time though!
